Repeat visitors have a different problem from first-timers. They do not need another list of famous Japanese products. They need to know if the bottle changed, if the exact mascara is still sold, and if home-market availability has erased the old advantage.
Bring evidence from your own bathroom or desk. A photo of the front, back, barcode, and volume is more useful than a translated brand name. It also makes a store substitution easier to reject.
A restock should be boring in the best sense: fast, exact, and based on something you already use. The limited pen below is the deliberate exception, and its stock record shows why exceptions need discipline.
Exact products, dated evidence
Prices change with the selected home market. Weak regional matches and missing home prices stay visible.

A sensible restock usually covers the time until your next likely trip or a reliable home source, not an imaginary lifetime supply. Liquids are heavy. Formulas change. Preferences change faster than a large stash.
For pens, record the body model and refill code separately. A familiar body with an unavailable refill is not a practical restock.
Beauty ranges reuse colours, family names, and bottle shapes. Hada Labo alone requires line, sub-line, texture, volume, package type, and market checks. Mascara adds finish, brush, shade, and removal method.
Regional labels can reflect local rules. They can also signal a different formula or package. Treat a regional counterpart as evidence to inspect, not proof of exact equivalence.
The site separates exact Class A matches from disclosed Class B counterparts. Use that identity label before reading the percentage difference.

The Full Black Jetstream illustrates the point. A low direct-store reference is not a buying opportunity when the item is sold out. A live marketplace offer is not equivalent to first-party stock.
Set one acceptable substitute before the trip. If the exact item is missing and the substitute does not meet the same need, stop. Do not let sunk search time turn into a poor purchase.
For routine beauty products, home-market stock may be worth a small premium. It lowers luggage weight and gives you a local label, return route, and easier replenishment.
A planned drugstore basket can clear the JPY5,000 pre-tax threshold. That does not mean every basket should. Compare the intended quantity first, then apply the valid tax method.
The process changes on 1 November 2026. After that date, you pay tax at purchase and need customs confirmation before checked baggage is handed over. Keep the products accessible until that check is complete.
Cosmetics and other consumables no longer need the old special sealing under the new system, but items consumed in Japan are not eligible for the refund. Follow the current shop and customs instructions.

A route with an end
Record exact labels, barcodes, volumes, shades, remaining stock at home, and a maximum quantity.
Compare every pack with the old product. Place uncertain variants in a separate basket or return them to the shelf.
Remove speculative extras. Keep post-November tax-refund goods accessible for departure confirmation.
