Who this guide is for

First-trip, one-suitcase planner

Trip
A first leisure trip, usually one to two cities, with one checked bag or less.
Need
A short list that is easy to find, useful at home, and unlikely to cause trouble at the airport.
Rule
Buy only if you can name the item, its use, its pack size, and where it will go in your luggage.

Use another guide if you already know your repeat SKUs or plan a specialist camera, watch, or craft purchase.

Japan makes ordinary shopping feel like an attraction. That is useful until the fourth floor of a large store, when every pen, pouch, snack, and bottle starts to look essential.

The answer is not a longer list. It is a small set of products with clear identities and low regret. The five below cover travel organisation, an extra carrying bag, one personal-care item, one piece of stationery, and one dated food gift.

Treat this as a filter, not a scavenger hunt. If a shop is not on your route, let the item go. Your trip is more valuable than a small price difference.

Exact products, dated evidence

Five decisions, not a shopping haul

Prices change with the selected home market. Weak regional matches and missing home prices stay visible.

Buy for the trip

MUJI Polyester Hanging Toiletry Case Black

The exact black case, SKU 4550344904473, is compact enough to earn its space immediately. It can organise the rest of the trip instead of waiting unused in a suitcase.

Check: This is a Japanese-brand product made in Cambodia. Match the SKU and black colour; do not turn country of manufacture into a false quality claim.

Buy if you need capacity

MARNA Shupatto Compact Bag M SUMI

The SUMI M bag is a 15-litre, 5kg-load day bag that collapses quickly. It solves the common last-day problem: small purchases no longer fit in the day pack.

Check: Match model S520GY, M size, and SUMI colour. It is made in China, and the Japan item alone is below the tax-free minimum.

DHC Medicated Lip Cream 1.5g

The 1.5g stick is small, easy to identify by JAN 4511413503997, and has useful home-market evidence. It is a better test of the site method than a vague 'drugstore haul'.

Check: The Japan product is regulated and regional labels can differ. Buy for personal use only after you have checked the ingredients and your destination rules.

Pilot Kakuno Clear Medium

The clear Kakuno with a medium nib is inexpensive, specific, and easy to explain. It offers more lasting value than a random multipack of novelty pens.

Check: Confirm the medium nib, clear body, cartridge included in the pack, and converter compatibility. Other nibs and regional packages are different offers.

Shiroi Koibito White 12 pieces

The 12-piece white box is a manageable first food gift: individually wrapped, a known piece count, and small enough to protect inside a bag.

Check: Read the physical best-before date and allergens. Keep it below 28°C, and remember that the single box is below the tax-free minimum.

01

Build a list that survives a tired afternoon

Give every planned purchase one job: use during the trip, use every week at home, or give to a named person. If it has no job, it is browsing, not a shopping task.

Limit each job to one primary item and one backup. 'A black hanging case, SKU 4550344904473' is actionable. 'Something from MUJI' is an invitation to spend an hour and leave with six unrelated objects.

Large stores are useful because they compress the search. Loft and Hands cover stationery and home goods; MUJI covers its own exact range. Their convenience is the reason to visit, not proof that every item is rare or made in Japan.

02

Small purchases do not become tax-free by themselves

Japan's current threshold is JPY5,000 before tax at one participating shop on one day. A JPY770 lip product or JPY841 pen does not qualify alone. Do not let a tax-free sign persuade you to build a larger basket than you wanted.

Until 31 October 2026, eligible purchases can use the current point-of-sale method. From 1 November, you pay the tax-inclusive price and complete export confirmation before checked baggage is handed over. The refund then comes through the participating operator.

The price cards on this site apply the current rule to each exact observation. A shop basket can behave differently, so ask the retailer and keep the receipt.

03

A Japanese brand is not an origin label

The MUJI case is made in Cambodia. The Shupatto bag is made in China. Both can still be sound purchases because design, dimensions, price, and use are product facts too.

This distinction prevents two common mistakes. You do not pay an 'authentic Japan' premium for an object whose origin was never checked, and you do not reject a useful Japanese-brand item because its production is regional.

For a craft, origin can be central to the purchase. For a travel organiser, function may matter more. Decide which fact matters before you enter the shop.

04

Put food last, then protect it

Food has a clock. Buy it after you know the departure date, the weather, and the remaining luggage space. A beautiful box with a short date or heat damage is not a successful gift.

Read the best-before date on the actual box. Check allergens and destination import rules. Place thin cookies between soft clothes, not against the suitcase wall.

Airport stock is useful, but it is not guaranteed. If one named food matters, buy it in town late in the trip and treat the airport as a backup.

A route with an end

How to shop this list

  1. First day

    Look, record, leave

Photograph the exact model, price, and shop. Buy only an item that helps during the trip.

  2. Middle days

    Make one planned store pass

Use one large store near an existing route. Buy the exact daily-use items and stop when the list is complete.

  3. Last full day

    Add dated gifts

Buy food after you can inspect space, heat exposure, dates, and the journey home.
